"SWIMMING & AQUATIC EXCELLENCE OUR GOAL"
The Director of Swimming, Mr Michael Ursu writes about his move to Cairns, and his ambition of taking TAS Swimming to the top.
 Mr Michael Ursu
Hello my name is Michael Ursu and I’m the Director of Swimming at TAS.
Two years ago, whilst freezing in Aubury, Victoria, I received a call from a School, “We need a Gold Licensed Coach to achieve our aim of becoming a school of swimming excellence - can you help us?” When the voice said the school was in Cairns, I could think of nothing better than being in the tropics. My wife was a little more sceptical! When we investigated the school and the tremendous aquatic facility, as they say, there was no going back!
It’s been a fantastic two years. My mission has been to develop TAS into a school of swimming and aquatic excellence. We are well on our way. We now have swimming as a core part of the junior school curriculum, with our junior school students swimming each week of the school term. Our school based club, TAS Swimming Inc, is the strongest in the region. Why wouldn’t they be, when they train at the best regional facility in Australia! Last weekend we won 62 medals at the Qld State Short Course Championships, and were the team with the biggest medal tally.
My wife and I are so glad we made the move. I’ve got such a rewarding job, doing what I love, coaching along side my dedicated swim staff in a caring and supportive School environment. |
