about_high_wire_sYear 8 Camp: Five Days, Four Nights

Students spend five days and four nights in and around the Barron River near Koah and begin a canoe expedition as far away as Mareeba. They will be on programme in their core class groups. Students prepare for and undertake an overnight hike expedition including map reading and navigation, cooking on small stoves in groups and do a river crossing in mini-rafts. They also participate in a two night canoe expedition down the Barron River, contribute to a community project near Koah and have other team building and initiative activities dispersed throughout there programme. This experience has the added advantage of being ideal preparation for the Year Nine programme that expands on these activities and themes.

 Year 9 Camp: 19 Days

The Year Camp is the flagship event of our Outdoor Education programme. Students start fourth term with a nineteen day camp, rotating through four key phases under the watchful eye of two Outdoor Instructors and a TAS teacher. Students undertake a four day hike expedition around the Tinaroo Creek and Black Mountain area, being responsible for all navigation, food preparation and the management of the expedition. Another phase sees the group camping in tents at Camp Tinaroo and partaking in activities such as; high and low ropes courses, environmental re-generation tree planting work, a visit to an age care facility to interact with residents, and off ground activities such as 'The Pamper Pole ' and rock climbing. A four day canoe expedition takes students to the far reaches of Lake Tinaroo and again challenges them to manage their own/groups well being and forcing them to exist in close quarters with the rest of the group. Students sleep under tarp shelters, cook and share food communally. The 'Adventure Skills' phase, based at Barrabadeen, involves student's abseiling, raft building, camp oven cooking, orienteering, and climbing 'Big George'. A full day solo mid way through the programme provides an opportunity for students to be reflective and think about their values and life in general.
